Macbeth (1997)

Dir. Jeremy Freeston / UK / Historical, Drama / Colour / 129m

After Polanki’s 1971 version, all went quiet in Cawdor and Dunsinane for almost a quarter century before Jeremy Freeston started casting and filming his new cinematic adaptation. And finally, it was shot in Scotland!

Young Jason Connery is miscast as the flawed and ambitious Macbeth, but Helen Baxendale gives a great showing as Lady Macbeth.

Extensively shot in Blackness and Dunfermline, the Freeston’s film manages to create an authentic eleventh century look but doesn’t quite have the grand vision of Welles or the visceral impact of Polanski.
